Description

Emphasizes the principles and conventions of the HCPCS/CPT clinical classification systems used in today’s healthcare settings. Other topics include applicable licensing and regulatory issues relative to coded data, payment and reimbursement systems, professional ethics, content of the medical record, decision-making processes, data validity and integrity, classification systems and nomenclature, and quality assessment and improvement. Students will be expected to apply decision making in record review for complete, accurate, and timely coding. HCPCS/CPT coding will also be practiced and applied in conjunction with ICD-10-CM for hospital ambulatory surgery, the physician’s office setting and other outpatient settings. The CMS developed Prospective Payment System for ambulatory care will be reviewed. Concepts covered in the lecture are explored in greater detail in the coding lab.
